About Me

Austin, Texas
When asked to give my political views, it is impossible for me to answer in just one word. According to the typology test I just took, I’m a Conservative Democrat, but I’ll be honest, I’m not that strongly opinionated about anything just yet. It’s not because I don’t care or I’m not interested, it’s because I recently turned eighteen and things are just now beginning to affect me. By taking a U.S. government class, I hope to gain knowledge of both past and present government and political situations as well as learn more about myself by challenging my thoughts, opinions, and beliefs about U.S. government.

Proactive

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/17/us/17wisconsin.html

The previous article talks about the current protests going on around the country. This particular article focuses on Wisconsin, where the protests first began. The newly elected governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, has plans to cut state benefits for union workers requiring them to pay more for their health insurance and pensions. The article claims that if approved, public worker's paychecks will be about seven percent less than they are now.  The Governor’s reasoning behind the cut stems from one thing: state budget. With a current deficit of about $137 million, Wisconsin might need to take drastic measures, although some argue that the cut is too drastic at a time when most people are already struggling financially. The article above shows that both sides are being proactive. The Governor knows that something needs to be done to reduce the state deficit and the public workers are quick to react in an organized manner in order to fight for what they want. It shows us that there is hope for promoting social capital in order to get the nation to where it needs to be.
